I had problems getting my replaced frets to push all the way in due to mallet bouncing and figured that was the "cost" of not having a professional do the work. This device worked perfectly and pressed my fret so the buzz was finally eliminated. It arrived quickly and worked excellent at a fraction of the cost of other devices. I needed this to pull some bushings out of an Epiphone Explorer and ran across this through a google search. This one is the same as others online, but at a much more reasonable price. Very handy tool to have in my guitar kit!
With experience, using feeler gauges is probably sufficient for nut slotting, but it's a lot easier to get right with a precision gauge like this one. Ruining a nut by cutting a slot too deep is easy to do. Misjudging the height of a string over the first fret with a feeler gauge or string ruler is also easy. Inconsistency can make playing more difficult or produce buzzing. This gauge lets me get every string within a thousandth of an inch or so of where I want it at that critical first fret where a truss rod adjustment has virtually no effect. And the price is half what it costs elsewhere.
Elmer has a number of products that seem to be the same as what SM sells but at a lower price. This is one of them. It's a well made and gives good, consistent, easy string spacing. I've seen another string spacing method that is arguably better, but it requires calipers, calculations, and precise filing procedures that could all lead to mistakes while this ruler is almost foolproof (along with being quick, easy, inexpensive, and effective).
These simple devices are well designed and constructed to perform the task of getting the strings out of the way to work on the fretboard on the occasions when the strings do not need to be completely removed. For their modest price, they should be in any tech's toolbox. I have purchased several products here and have been very impressed with the quality, service, and prices that Elmer Guitar has.
Impressed with the speed of delivery and the quality of the fret puller and chip guard. I have large hands and did not find the size of the tool to be an issue at all. I actually like how compact the tool is. Pre-heating your frets prior to removal is a good practice regardless of what tool is used, and the chip guard worked well to prevent chip damage. The price was very reasonable, especially compared to other instrument repair sites. The free shipping was indeed an added bonus. I'll be using this company's products more often.
I've been working on guitars for many years. I know all the knob removal techniques. I had 2 knobs on a Gibson ES335 that wouldn't budge. This tool lifted them off quickly and effortlessly, and was way less expensive than competitors. Plus, it will allow you to pull tremolo studs should you need to replace. Super happy with this purchase. 😊
